USER FRIENDLY HOMEMADE DIETS FOR DOGS & CATS
Welcome! This diet is designed to be easy, effective and affordable for you and your dog. It can be raw or modified raw. The diets recommended in many books can be confusing and expensive and difficult to implement in the average person's lifestyle. This plan is for people who are just beginning to incorporate natural feeding or for those who find other recipes too complicated or expensive. This diet uses grocery store foods and organic foods. This diet is not "rocket science": however it will deliver far more nutritious and usable food elements than any processed commercial product. Raw is preferred in doing this program, but if the dog or cat refuses to eat certain things raw, then try that item cooked in the diet. The protein in this kind of diet is high quality and easily digested, therefore far less will be undigested to trigger allergies. This diet is low in grains (not well used by a dog or cat anyway) and is formulated to duplicate what they would obtain in nature as much as possible, considering the availability of ingredients and time constraints of our daily life. This diet can also be a modified raw diet, or part raw and part cooked if needed. Carnivores (dogs and cats ARE carnivores by nature) need protein, fat, plant carbohydrates and very little grain (their dietary needs are different from people). They need fruits and vegetables and "greens" just like we do. Studies show that dogs do not convert complex carbohydrates to energy for daily needs. They use fat for 80% of their direct energy needs. When a dog is too fat, reduce the carbohydrates first and don't deprive the dog of protein and fats and vegetables. Scrutinize senior foods to be sure you are not loading carbohydrates and drastically cutting the essential proteins and fats. Carbohydrates make them fat and elevate sugar levels, just like in us. Watch out for "Lite" foods for this reason. Labels with "meat" as a first ingredient do not insure the food is low in grains. Labels can be deceptive. For puppies and pregnant bitches, you may add extra bone meal or a calcium supplement, such as DogZymes Bone Builder or organic natural bone meal. The puppy, the athlete, the couch potato dog, the working dog, or the old timer all usually do much better when fed a diet with a good variety of natural meat, vegetables and even some fruit. This is the best way to assure you are getting REAL antioxidants and highly digestible proteins and fats that can protect the health of the animal, just as in humans. Even if you feed raw foods, use the probiotic DogZymes Digestive Enhancer, as it protects the gut from possible pathogens that could be present. This is the easiest way to protect the digestive tract for the lifetime of the dog. If you are changing diets or the animal is stressed, use a double dose of DogZymes Digestive Enhancer. This keeps the digestive tract and bowel stable and the transition smooth. This is one of the most important additions you make every day. Just because a product is labeled as a "probiotic" does not mean it is equal in analysis and numbers to DogZymes brands. There is a vast difference in brands. Highest analysis and quality yields highest results and digestive protection. Portions: This diet is very flexible. Start with about the same volume of food the dog or cat has already been consuming. Watch the dog's condition for a week and if you see undesired weight gain, cut the portions until you reach maintenance level. We recommend 2 to 3 feedings daily if possible. If you make a mistake one day don't panic, just straighten things out the next day. The dog usually makes its own metabolic adjustments and will be just fine. Things will happen and we all survive. This diet recommends a 50%-10%-40% meat-carbohydrate-vegetable mixture for all dogs or cats. For dogs needing extra protein and energy for hunting, working, racing, etc, we alter the ratio to 60-30-20. Although this change is not absolutely necessary, the higher protein and fat provide support for these added nutritional demands. When stress and demands stop, go back to 50-10-40 ratio recommendations. You can safely omit grains entirely if it is determined that your dog's tolerance to grains is in question. We can substitute other carbohydrates that work better. An important part of using this diet is to rotate the foods during the week. Providing a broader nutritional base is important to more closely duplicate a natural diet and meet the body's needs. Add Bone Builder 122 when feeding meat without bones in it. You do not need the extra bone meal if the dog or cat is consuming bones in the meal. Use 2-3 Tablespoons of bone meal or 1 teaspoon of Bone Builder per pound of boneless meat. When feeding a pregnant bitch or fast growing puppies, a little more may be needed for growth demands and size increases. During these times, add extra bone meal to the food at 1 teaspoon per cup of food mix, or use whatever special brand of calcium supplement you like, but follow the directions. If you are trembling at the thought of putting raw food in your pet's mouth, start with meat cooked rare and work yourway up to raw and be confident in that you are doing what is best for your animals. One of the most important reasons to feed DogZymes Digestive Enhancer in every meal is to keep beneficial bacteria levels high in case a bad bacterium gets into the food. When good bacteria levels are correct, bad bacteria are kept in check. Isn't Mother Nature amazing? For those who are apprehensive in starting this feeding program, our consultation service can take the jitters out of getting started or to discuss special needs. We do not charge any fees for light consultations. Take a deep breath and relax. If you can prepare food for yourself and your family, you can do this. MEAT & PROTEINS Raw or rare beef - Ground Beef or chunks Venison - Raw or cooked Poultry - Raw necks & backs bones (These are safe bones) Poultry wings, legs, thighs - raw or cooked and de-boned Lamb - Raw or cooked de-boned except for raw joint bones Bison/Buffalo - Raw or cooked Cottage cheese or yogurt - Natural type or organic, not low/no no fat brand Fish - Mackerel, salmon, sardines, tuna, smelt (should be de-boned) Eggs - Cooked or raw, with or without shells Organ Meat - Liver, kidney, heart, raw tripe, or gizzards. Feed up to 3 times per week or 10% of a meal, maximum GRAIN & CARBOHYDRATES Brown rice - (cooked well done) Oatmeal - Old-fashioned 5 min cooked or soaked until soft Pasta - noodles, occasionally if dog is wheat tolerant White - Potato high starch use only occasionally Sweet Potato - Low glycemic a good choice for dogs Ancient grains - Cooked Cream of wheat - Only for wheat tolerant dogs White rice - Occasionally Bulgar wheat - (if no grain or wheat intolerance) VEGETABLES/FRUIT: If you feed raw veggies and fruit, pulp, mash or grind them in a chopper or processor. Once the dogs are used to them, you can try feeding chunks, but it is more difficult for the dog to break down because of the skins on the vegetable chunks. Even frozen vegetables with skins like broccoli stems, peas, green bean chunks and broccoli florets digest better if you chop them a bit in a food processor. The goal is raw for nutritional benefits but using cooked occasionally is fine. Feed raw vegetables at least once daily. Cooked veggies don't need grinding but are easier to blend if ground/mashed. Raw is preferable because valuable enzymes, vitamins and minerals are not damaged by heat. Sometimes it is necessary to cook vegetables to get the dog used to them in the diet. Raw is always better and most canines do fine with ground or chunked raw vegetables and fruit as long as the chunks are small. Fruits: Apples, pears, cantaloupe, oranges, apricots, peaches, bananas, pineapple, cherries, watermelon, papaya, mango, and most other fruits are commonly used. No Grapes or Raisins. Be informed that fruits are also a source of carbohydrates. Vegetables: asparagus, carrots, zucchini, collard greens, broccoli, winter squash, summer squash, cauliflower, kale, various frozen, thawed greens such as chopped collards, mustard greens, beet greens, turnip greens, (spinach should be fed only occasionally) sweet corn (occasionally), legumes such as soybeans, peas and green beans should be used sparingly and their use is not intended to replace meat protein) tomatoes (don't overdo), cabbage, parsley, sweet potatoes, non-salted garlic powder on occasion, in moderation, not fresh cloves. No ONIONS. Herbs: This is something to discuss with knowledgeable people unless you have a fundamental background in herbs. Call Natures Farmacy with any questions. PREPARATION TIPS Rice should always be soft cooked but not like glue! An effective time saver is to bake the rice in the oven. Put water, rice, seasoning, veggies or meat (for flavor only- not to replace meat in meal) in a baking pan, cover and bake at 375 degrees. Experiment with your oven and pan to see how long it takes your size pan to cook thoroughly. Raw oatmeal may be ground or softened with hot water, cooked, or softened with cool water. "Test drive" cooking other grains, as they don't all need the same cooking time. You can portion into freezer bags for later use to save time. Buy foods on sale when possible. Please note that grains are not a necessary part of this program. We include them for fiber and starch only if needed. Frozen vegetables are better, especially when you have included DogZymes Digestive Enhancer or Liquid Dispersible to the diet. Frozen vegetables and fruit need to be thoroughly rinsed just as does fresh produce. Put in a colander, thaw, and wash before chopping or processing. Add herbs like parsley, basil, oregano, garlic, etc. Organically grown is always best if you can get it, but in reality organic is not readily available everywhere AND can be expensive. Otherwise, FROZEN vegetables are FINE. Actually frozen produce is picked riper and processed immediately, therefore more nutrients are retained. Frozen produce also gives you a greater variety in winter. Any field-ripened, home grown vegetables are superior to the commercial supermarket version. Fresh commercial produce is picked under-ripe and has not developed its maximum nutrient value and does suffer nutrient losses while being transported and held for display. The concept of this diet program is to make it fit your lifestyle (User Friendly) so that you can develop a custom homemade plan that is simple and fits your routine. Feel free to call Nature's Farmacy for help. Our dieticians are always willing to guide you through until you have reached your comfort zone. There are many other diet ideas available that are much more complicated and need to be specifically followed. This diet is easily followed and is based on sound nutritional principles and practices, and provides a well rounded diet that fits the needs of many animals, even those with special needs. For treats, use vegetables, cheese or meats rather than dog biscuits containing grains if your dog has a grain intolerance or is overweight. Give your dogs nutrition not fillers. Because this diet utilizes nutrient supplements, you can save some steps and eliminate most of your concerns. If you continue this diet long-term, as most do, it is simple and reassuring to have blood work done periodically to monitor your dog's nutritional status if you have any concerns or if the animal has a health problem. Talk to your vet about doing this. This is something many people do routinely anyway. Use red meat for at least 50% of the protein during a week. If your dog can't tolerate any of the different meat/proteins listed, eliminate the problem food. For example, if chicken causes your dog(s) problems, eliminate the chicken and substitute another meat. This diet can be used the same as prescription dog food products by eliminating what the dog can't tolerate or lowering protein or fat. Avoid sugar, excess salt, preservatives, propylene glycol, MSG, and other unidentifiable items. If your dog has a yeast problem, eliminate the grain and resume it only if it doesn't allow the condition to return. When feeding bones, raw is best as bones are made brittle by cooking and can splinter. It is our opinion that poultry wing, leg and thighbones are not safe, no matter raw or cooked. Consider safety when you feed any bones to your dogs. Large knuckle bones work great. If they get dirty, boil 30 minutes or wash and put in the microwave for 30-40 seconds to kill germs. Refrigerate between uses. They benefit greatly from raw bones and they are a good source of nutrition. Nothing is better for healthy teeth. If you have questions about anything you want to feed, call us. ESSENTIAL BASIC SUPPLEMENTS FOR BALANCED DIET: 1. Vitamin Supplement: DogZymes Ultimate, which will be utilized if and when needed. This has a guaranteed analysis and adding this maintains essential balance to the diet. All vitamins, trace and macro mineral, plus all essential amino acids for canine and feline for optimum health. 2. Probiotic (Beneficial bacteria and digestive enzymes): DogZymes Digestive Enhancer (regular or Liquid Dispersible). This is "Nature's Way" of protecting the GI tract from bad bacterial growth (negative pathogens) and maximize nutrition, assist immune system, reduce allergy causing undigested proteins and reduce the potential for bloat and gas. This supplement is of extreme importance!! 3. Calcium sources: DogZymes KA Calcium use 1/8 teaspoon per cup of boneless meat. 4. Vitamin C: DogZymes Cran-Tri-C (Ester C, Ascorbate and Ascorbic acid) in concentrated organic 90% cranberry powder base. One eighth teaspoon contains 721 mg of C total, with cranberry as a whole food base to provide "whole food" synergy to correctly utilize the three forms of "C" in the cells. There is much difference of opinion in established "recommended" doses of C usage for dogs or cats. Use what you or your vet has determined to be functional and safe. Up to 5000mg per animal per day is considered safe by most nutritionists. The NRC recognizes that 300mg per dog per day is minimal. Due to the concentration, this is a very economical source of Vitamin C. 5. Selenium: 200 mcg per 150 lb dog; 100 mcg per 75-to100 lb dog; 50 mcg (25 to 50 lb dog) 25 mcg (5 to 20 lb dog) is the general recommendation from veterinarians and nutritionists. Ask about our specific Selenium Vitamin E supplement or Ultimate. 6. Joint and Bone support: DogZymes CCM Plus is the best source for Glucosamine and Chondroitin for dogs and cats. It is superior to any other similar supplement as it provides the unique enzymes in the product to break down the molecules of Glucosamine and Chondroitin, rendering them over 90% available instead of the usual 25% in most other products. Unless these enzymes are present, the body has difficulty absorbing the beneficial ingredients. This product also contains unique all natural anti-inflammatory elements that reduce and prevent discomfort and damage. CCM Plus enhances the connective tissue reconstruction for healthy joints and provides protection from wear and tear caused by strenuous exercise and longevity. CCM plus provides for the supply of natural lubrication of joints adding stability and strength also decreasing pain association. 7. Other additives: DogZymes Mega Omega (whole organic ground Flax seed concentrate). This is absolutely the most economical Omega 3 product on the market. Plus, it is the correct balance of Omega 3, and 6 and 9, so there is no guessing and/or overdoses of Omega 3, as is happening with overuse of fish oils, flax oil, cod liver oil. At Natures Farmacy, we do not recommend using any fish oils. Do not add extra Omega 3, 6, or 9 unless you know the current values in your diet. Call us with questions. Overdoses of Omega 3 are common and will unbalance the important 3-6-9 ratios. Kelp, Brewers Yeast and Garlic, or other specific nutrient sources should be used following the recommendations of nutritionist and canine dieticians. If you are considering any other supplements, call and we will assist you in balancing your program needs. We do have the ability to work with you and prepare custom supplements to meet your animals' needs. Remember that there is no one canine complete formula that can possibly meet all needs and feeding programs. Optional Fruit and Vegetable Capsules: These capsules are a human product, but have been great to use for dogs and cats also. If your pet is reluctant to eat raw fruit and vegetables, initially grind these foodstuffs (not necessary to puree) in a food processor and mix into the meat. Or you may consider these capsules made from concentrated fruit and vegetable juices, which are primarily from organic produce. These encapsuled foods are wonderfully convenient if you travel with a dog that eats raw. For example, when we are showing or traveling, we just bring the fruit and vegetable capsules and add to fresh meat with DOGZYMES Digestive Enhancer. This provides our Great Danes with the nutrition of raw fruit and vegetables in an easy form to carry. These capsules make it possible to greatly boost the intake of a broad range of vitamins not available in diets in sufficient amounts, especially in manufactured food products. Antioxidants and nutrients known to help prevent diseases including cancer and reducing cell damage (the root of all chronic disease) are severely lacking in our foods today, even raw. Finding nutritionally complete fruit and vegetables today is nearly impossible. Fresh produce 5 days out of the field lose about 75% of their nutrient value, and we all know what the pesticides do to us. These capsules provides the diet 17 fruits and vegetables in concentrated capsule form, juiced already, (see study info) WITHOUT sugars, carbs, acid, gluten and calories, which are removed with the water in drying. There are 12, 455 scientifically identified individual vitamins in fruits and vegetables. They all work together. The average vitamin supplement for humans or animals contains maybe 16 or so MAN MADE vitamins. You and our dogs are missing about 12,425 of the rest of them. Three or four fruit and veggies a day doesn't do it, even if raw, BUT, ONLY 4 Fruit and Vegetable capsules daily equals the nutrients in 17 servings of raw produce daily at a fraction of the cost. And it is so simple - all the benefits without the effort even if your dog or your family refuses to eat their veggies. The fact that cancer is now the #1 killer of dogs tells us we need to pay attention to what human research is proving every day: DISEASES ARE PREVENTABLE and AGING CAN BE SLOWED by including raw fruit and vegetables daily. This is now being considered in regards to our canine family and their health as well. We have many studies you can request by emailing or calling. Bone Builder M122
August 29th, 2008 by Dr. Randy
Having provided Bovine, Porcine, and even Elk Bone meal for the past 20 years to our customers, we have grown alarmed with the issues surrounding these all natural sources. Governmental regulations have caused our impeccable suppliers to remove themselves from supplying us with these products.
We have developed using all human grade ingredients, a new product that we have dubbed Bone Builder. Its design would also allow us to call it muscle builder as well. Bone Builder allows us to mimic the best effects of Bovine, Porcine and even our very popular Organic Elk Bone meal.
All minerals extracted are from certified Organic sources and are safe for even human consumption.
Calcium is essential for building strong bones and teeth. It also works in a proper functioning of body’s cell membranes. Calcium plays an important role in muscle growth, blood clotting and heart stabilization. It reduces nervous disorders and muscle cramps.
To make Bone Builder better than traditional bone meals, Nature’s Farmacy has boosted up the Magnesium level to .50%. Magnesium is necessary for growth and development, wound healing, immune system function, nervous and cardiovascular system health, and the absorption of calcium. Magnesium regulates active calcium transport and is important for strong bones.
Where calcium stimulates the muscles, magnesium is used to relax the muscles.
Phosphorous is considered the twin nutrient to Calcium. Phosphorous hardens the bones and teeth. Phosphorous plays an important role in transforming proteins, fats and carbohydrates into fuel.
Phosphorous in also needed for the blood’s acid balance or pH.
Copper is involved in red blood cell proliferation and maximizes the oxygen intake of cells. This mineral enhances the blood vessel’s strength and elasticity and does protective work preventing cell damage.
Iron is a red blood cell component and therefore essential in oxygen’s circulation. Iron also is recognized to promote muscle function.
Zinc is involved in most of the body’s metabolic processes. First in encourages the healing of wounds and burns. Secondly, Zinc increases the sensibility of all sensory organs. Thirdly it enhances the immune system. It is necessary to insure the proper functioning of insulin and normalizes the formation of collagen in the body.
Manganese is essential in all enzymatic systems and necessary in bone structure.
Iodine has long been recognized for its role in Thyroid function.
Cobalt is an essential precursor to the absorption of B-12 vitamins.

Pure organic and natural Muscle Builder is the ultimate whey protein isolate source for Canine athletes and health-conscious owners/handlers who want to build or maintain muscle mass on the Canine companions. Unlike other products,Muscle Builder contains no protein blends or unwanted ingredients. Purified through a proprietary ion exchange process, Muscle Buildercontains all of the essential amino acids, and is rich in branched chain amino acids (BCAAs), which are metabolized directly and absorbed quickly into muscle tissue.
This exciting DOGZYMES® product, containing no carbohydrates, no fats, no sugars, no lactose, no artificial flavors is all natural and comes from only grass fed cows in New Zealand. DOGZYMES® Muscle Builder is 100% organically produced whey proteins isolate and Organic Peruvian Maca. An enhancing probiotic package is included to further its absorption into the Canine body. No preservatives and no fillers make DOGZYMES® Muscle Builder the only choice for Canine athletes.
Muscle Builder is comprised of high-biological-value proteins and proteins that have different functions. The main whey proteins are beta-lactoglobulin and alpha-lactoglobulin, two small globular proteins that account for about 70 to 80% of total whey protein. Proteins present in lesser amounts include the immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM, but especially IgG, glycomacropeptides, bovine serum albumin, lactoferrin.
High-protein diets like those containing DOGZYMES® Muscle Builder have been found to reduce body weight and increase insulin sensitivity. There are several animal studies in which whey and whey factors are said to exert some positive effects on immunity and cancer. Observed immuno-enhancing properties are believed by some researchers to be related only partially to Muscle Builder nutritional effects. Enhancement of host humoral immune response has been associated, in some of these studies, with whey’s role in increasing glutathione levels in the body.
In animal studies at Australia’s University of Adelaide, whey proteins were found to be protective against colon cancer, relative to red meat and some other protein sources. A whey protein diet significantly decreased tumor burden and extended life in mice with colon cancer, compared to mice with colon cancer fed-standard diets.
Feed up to 1 gram of organic DOGZYMES® Muscle Builder per pound of body weight. Store at room temperature.

What is CoQ10?
CoQ10 is a naturally occurring compound found in each cell in the body of dogs and all animals. CoQ10 plays a key role in producing energy in the mitochondria. The mitochondria are the cell sections responsible for the production of energy in the form of ATP.
Why Canines need CoQ10
- Heart failure
- Cardiomyopathy
- Canine heart attack prevention and recovery
- High blood pressure

MSM (Methylsulfonal Methane)
August 12th, 2008 by Dr. Randy
What is MSM? MSM is derived from DMSO a liquid by product from the pulp paper industry. It is absolutely impossible for MSM to be an all natural product; rather it is a chemical derivative.
Sulfur is present in every cell of every living organism. Although we do get sulfur from much of what we eat there are cases that require MSM supplementation. Some animal research indicates MSM has the ability to relieve pain associated with:
- Degenerative arthritis
- Chronic back pain
- Chronic headache
- Muscle pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Tendinitis and Bursitis
- Post - traumatic pain and inflammation
- Allergies
There is much hype about the use of MSM as a cure all unfortunately there is little or no research to prove its efficacy. At Nature’s Farmacy, we do find anecdotal evidence that it helps in some cases of arthritis and therefore carry the product. Our MSM is 99% pure and of Human Grade.

Studies suggest that feeding your dog a diet low in phosphorus may help slow the progression of kidney failure by reducing mineral deposits in the kidneys. And while there’s no conclusive proof that low-protein diets slow CRF in dogs, your pet may feel better on such a diet. Low-protein diets generate fewer nitrogenous wastes - high levels of which can cause nausea and vomiting in dogs with kidney disease. A cautionary note: low-protein diets, if not carefully managed, can lead to malnutrition. So be sure to consult your veterinarian/nutritionist before making any such dietary changes.
Above all, keep a watchful eye. Report any changes in your dog’s eating, drinking, and elimination habits to your veterinarian/nutritionist. Such changes may alert your veterinarian/nutritionist to the possibility of kidney disease - or help your veterinary practitioner adjust treatment if therapy has already begun.
With kidney disease, your dog becomes less alert, loses its appetite, and may vomit. Take your dog to your veterinarian if it shows any of the following signs that sometimes (but not always) point to kidney disease:
Chronic Failure
- Increased thirst and urine volume
- Weight loss
- Weakness and exercise intolerance
- Tendency to bleed or bruise easily
Acute Failure
- Dehydration (To test for this, gently pull the skin away from your dog’s middle. If the skin does not immediately spring back, the dog may be dehydrated.)
- Stiff-legged gait and arched back (a sign of painful kidneys)
- Little or no urine production

N-Z Colostrum
August 8th, 2008 by Dr. Randy
Our colostrum comes from New Zealand. It is collected from only pasture fed cows that are pesticide, antibiotic, and hormone free. This product is pasteurized to maximize biosecurity. Colostrum has been used as a medical treatment for over 6000 years.
N-Z Colostrum is unique source of immunoglobulins. The immunoglobulins in N-Z Colostrum are specialized bioactive proteins or molecules found in serum and other tissue fluids, including the first milk of mammals (colostrum). There are five classes of immunoglobulins that are recognized in mammals Immunoglobulins G (IgG), Immunoglobulins A (IgA), Immunoglobulins M (IgM), Immunoglobulins E (IgE), and Immunoglobulins D (IgD).
The function of these molecules is to bind to invading organisms and to activate specific actions that help to prevent infection and to rid the body of disease causing pathogens. They function in cell killing, inflammation and prevention of bacterial and viral attachment. The most prevalent class of Immunoglobulins in all species is IgG. Immunoglobulins have an integral role in the immune defense system in that they form antibodies.
Many anecdotal reports on colostrum show it can used be treat allergies, cancer, ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, poor wound healing, hepatitis C, bacterial and viral infections, multiple sclerosis, lactose intolerance, obesity, and peptic ulcers.

August 8th, 2008 by Dr. Randy
Neem Oil is a broad-spectrum botanical insecticide from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica). Amazingly, the neem tree produces a compound called azadirachtin, which protects it from damaging insects. Seeds of the neem tree contain the highest concentration of azadirachtin.
Neem seed oil (NSO) is composed of a complex mixture of biologically active compounds. Nature’s Farmacy Neem Oil is removed from the seeds because only pure neem oil has this insecticide capability. Neem oil has been used for hundreds of years in controlling plant pests and diseases. Many researchers have shown that the spray solution of neem oil helps to control common pests like ticks, fleas, and flies.
For pets, Neem Oil can be added to pet shampoo to kill ticks and fleas or the area where the pets usually use can be treated with Neem Oil spray. Recommended ratio for making spray solution: mix 1 teaspoon pure Nature’s Farmacy Neem Oil in a quart of warm water and 1/4 tsp. pet shampoo or dish liquid (As a surfactant). Shake it well to mix properly. Quantity of Neem Oil can be increased proportionately for making spray in larger quantities. A light mist is all that required to treat your animal.

The Miracles Within Us (Volume 2)By Jeanette Pickett Copyright 2003. All rights reserved
There are virtually millions of bacteria and fungi moving across your face as you read this. There are over a trillion in your mouth. These microbes multiply extremely fast, so fast in fact that you swallow trillions daily. All healthy mammal bodies have 10 times more living, feeding microbes than they do of their own body cells.
Professor Gary Hufffnagle, from the University of Michigan's Health System states "It's been estimated that there are 100 trillion microbes in the human body and 10 trillion cells, so we like to say we are a minority in our own body."
These are our normal microflora. Included in this normal microflora are the good microbes (beneficial bacteria and fungi) as well as other microbes (negative pathogens), which can harm us or harm our animals. The population of good microflora, assist in the control of the negative pathogens that are within us, as well as those attempting to invade. The contribution of these good microflora cannot be overstated. In fact, it is well documented that the good microflora contribute in many ways including but not limited to the manufacture of vitamins needed by the body to prevent cell mutation and even cancer. Those of us that have been working with these beneficial species for over 30 years are finally getting overdue confirmation from the rest of the scientific and medical world. Recently Huffnagle published a book entitled "The Probiotic Revolution" Hardly a revolution to some of us who have been strenuously educating the masses on the inclusion of beneficial species for so long. Much recognition to the mass of microbes in the animal body as an independent functioning organ has recently been recognized. It thus has been labeled the forgotten organ. It has been verified that the average Great Dane for example has about 2 ½ pounds of microbes, more mass than that of the heart, kidneys and pancreas combined. This forgotten organ is thus labeled an organ because all those microbes have DNA and make enzymes and other chemical compounds. As an animal eats, it is therefore feeding all those microbes. (100 trillion) Because these microbes live right next to cells, they affect how the cells in the body respond.
Probiotics can include any live microorganism, which delivers a beneficial health effect when ingested. Microbes prefer acidic living conditions. This is why we refer to them as lactic acid utilizing bacteria. It is no wonder then that we find large populations of microbes in the stomach and intestines, an environment of harsh acidic conditions.
Scientists have long known the use of microbial cultures in the manufacturing of dairy products and certain pharmaceuticals. Through research and technological advances, we have learned that specific strains of microbes, when eaten, deliver specific Health benefits.
Recent research has clearly shown animals (including humans) eating specific strains of probiotics:
· Have fewer gastrointestinal (GI) and respiratory illnesses.
· Are less susceptible to and recover faster from infectious diseases.
· Are more resistant to and recover more rapidly from ulcerations.
· Maintain white blood cell counts in time of stress.
· Gain resistance to the viral gastroenteritis commonly referred to as "stomach flu".
· Experience less severe colds.
· Reduced negative oral bacteria that cause bad breath and initiate tooth decay and gum disease.
Published microbial research in the past 10 years has been exponential. From only 60 plus studies from the 60's thru the 90's to over 1000 studies from 2002 to the present.
When choosing probiotic (microbial cultures) supplements it is imperative that you insist on products that not only list the genus but the species as well. For example, the genus Lactobacillus has over 20 species and many of them are simply of now benefit to the animal or human. Some species of Lactobacillus are necessary to make cheese or yogurt but have no measurable value in the mammals digestive system where as Lactobacillus Acidophilus is held in high regard as to it's importance in the utilization of nutrients. If the product lists, the genus but not the species just walk away.
In addition, they should clearly state and guarantee the number of colony forming units (one CFU is 1 billion microbes) and the buyer be suspicious If the label just gives weight of bacteria in grams or milligrams. That information is irrelevant; you need to know how many are alive.
To maximize health in all animals we must insist on open labeling of the probiotics we consume. A minimal volume of 5 billion CFU per 20 pounds of bodyweight should be consumed daily by all animals including we humans. Labeling is still very uneven and those probiotics that don't walk the walk should be avoided. Knowing that research and development have still a long way to go, as scientists are daily learning more about the care and feeding of the "forgotten organ".
"The largest proportion of the nervous system outside the brain is found in the gut," Huffnagle says, which gives added meaning to the word "stomach ache." There are more transmitters made there than any other place in the body, and we're realizing that bacteria can respond to these neurotransmitters. The gut may be a central sensor for the whole for the whole immune system.
Huffangle's lab found out, for example, that changing the type of microbes that live in the gut actually changes the way that the lungs respond to allergens.
In addition, they discovered that microbes are involved in the all important anti-inflammatory process.
Inflammation has been described by Robert Ebisch as "the immune system's (often excessive) response to all kinds of biological and chemical triggers". He adds, "And can underline problems ranging from allergic reactions to heart disease, from digestive disorders to cancer".
Scientists have uncovered that when microbe eat and digest different foodstuffs, They produce waste products, and these waste products are anti-inflammatory signals for the immune system to be more tolerant.
Research has further shown a direct correlation between undigested foodstuffs and the formation of carcinogens. Microbes are unsurpassed in their ability to breakdown and utilize these foodstuffs eliminating the formation of carcinogens.
There is also direct correlation between the changing of our eating habits and the diets of our animals and the rise of chronic illness. One reason is our unnecessary and often overuse of antibiotics that kill both beneficial species as well as the negative pathogens. Secondly, the diet of human's and animals alike has added to chronic illness. We have stepped away from fiber rich and spice enriched diets. (Spices are rich in antioxidants.) Instead, we eat diets that are prepared, preserved and excessively refined foodstuffs. Remember it takes an animal 2 hours to digest raw food and 14 hours to digest many commercially prepared foods. (This is also true for dog and cat food.)
Beginning in the 1980's, we have witnessed an alarming increase in chronic diseases: asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, as well s autoimmune diseases.
If we repopulate, and nourish these Miracles Within Us, we can improve our health and the health of the animals we care for tremendously.
Nature's Farmacy Inc. Nutritional Solutions Breeding Compiled by R.Frennier, PhD, PAS @ Nature's Farmacy Research Center, Jasper, Georgia
Getting a healthy, high quality litter simply cannot be left up to chance. Breeders recognize the importance of proper nutrition to achieve more healthy show quality litters.
Breeders have used the following protocol with outstanding success globally:
VitaSorb® beginning 60 days prior to the bitch coming in season and every 2 weeks until the litter is born. VitaSorb® allows for stronger heats, more high quality ova, thus more number one embryos. (Incidentally, use on the male is recommended also to assist in acquiring more and higher quality sperm.)
The continued use of VitaSorb® throughout the pregnancy is imperative to acquire strong, healthy, show quality puppies.
Let us now turn our attention to the bitch herself. The use of Digestive Enhancer® is of extreme importance. Digestive Enhancer® is a probiotic containing digestive enzymes, beneficial bacteria, antibodies, and beneficial yeast. Digestive Enhancer® is responsible for extracting more protein, energy, vitamins, minerals, and fiber out of each and every bite of any foodstuff. This concept allows for more nutritional availability for the transitioning bitch and her litter. The inclusion of beneficial bacteria on a daily basis also allows for the crowding out of negative pathogens. The beneficial yeast crowds out the negative yeast species that also hinder Canine health. The antibodies allow for what is called a gradual immunity to many negative pathogens.
A common problem with pregnant bitches is going off feed. Digestive Enhancer® also serves as an appetite stimulant. Maintaining an even appetite throughout gestation is imperative to nutritionally meeting the need of the bitch and her litter as it develops within the uterus. Liquid Dispersible® can be interchanged with Digestive Enhancer® at any time. The products are identical with exception of the carrier component. Liquid Dispersible® uses whey protein concentrate while Digestive Enhancer® uses dried egg powder as it's carrier component.
Ultimate® is formulated to take all guess work out of Canine nutrition. This revolutionary product contains all vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, and amino acids in adequate numbers to balance out the canine ration. Ultimate meets your dog's needs regardless of your type of program. Raw, kibble, canned, BARF: All are balanced intuitively by Ultimate®.
Ultimate® delivers complete nutrition, in a very palatable base of Parmesan cheese and Organic white animal fat. Cancer preventing amino acids Lycopene and L Taurine are added to extend the quality and longevity of your dog.
First Litter Paste® & Whelping Booster Paste®. Depending upon the number of litters your bitch has had determines which of these two products to use. The transition from non - lactating to lactating bitch is a complex one. The first litter bitch's body has not made this transition before, and deals with her inability to transform Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus, and Potassium to ready her body for parturition and lactation. (First Litter Paste®) The mature bitch, having had other litters before is usually in need of Calcium, Copper, and Zinc propionates. (Whelping Booster Paste®) If it has been over one year between litters, use the First Litter Paste®. Follow the directions as to the correct dosage for your bitches weight found on the label of every tube. A convenient dial - a - dose mechanism comes with each tube of First Litter Paste® and Whelping Booster Paste®.
?Administer the first dose at the end of month one of pregnancy.
?Administer the second dose at the first sign of whelping.
?Administer the third and final dose after the last puppy is born. Canine Paste® is always good to have on hand to further stimulate appetite or to stop diarrhea for any dog, pregnant or not.
Canine Paste® is a combination of beneficial bacteria, digestive enzymes, and antibodies. No serious dog breeder should ever be without at least one tube for emergency situations.
At birth, every puppy has a sterile gut and should receive a small quantity of Canine Paste ® or Liquid Dispersible® to inoculate the digestive system with beneficial bacteria. By administering Canine Paste®, you can avoid the establishment of negative pathogens in the otherwise sterile gut of your puppies.
Also at birth, administer a drop of VitaSorb® at the back of each puppies tongue to aid in boosting the immune system. VitaSorb® is also extremely helpful if you are confronted with fading puppy syndrome.
Puppy Bac®, is an all - natural puppy milk replacer made from real bitches milk. This highly palatable formula contains all essential nutrients as well as beneficial bacteria, digestive enzymes, antibodies, and Deccox®. (Deccox® prevents deadly coccidiosis.) Get your puppies off to a healthy pathogen free start with aid of Puppy Bac®. The
